If there ever was a need to spread the message of peace across the world, it is now. Every year, September 21 is celebrated as the International Day of Peace, or more popularly, World Peace Day. The United Nations declared this to be a day that would be dedicated to “strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples,” as far back as 1982. Each year since then, the day is welcomed with the ringing of the United Nations Peace Bell, which was created using coins donated by children from all across the world, except Africa and is today placed at the UN Headquarters in New York City. The bell was gifted by the United Nations Association of Japan as “a reminder of the human cost of war.”

One of the most effective ways of promoting peace between nations is through sports. According to an article published in Psychology International in October 2012, there is growing research to prove the effectiveness of sports in enhancing the well-being not only of individuals but also of communities and societies. In fact, the Olympic Games is one of the biggest examples of different nations coming together to play with and against each other. But why wait for some major event that is hosted once in a while, regardless of whether it is the Soccer World Cup or the currently running Asian Games?
