Rules for Playing 21 Card Rummy (Points Format) on RummyCircle

Objective of the game: The main aim of the game is to organize all the cards in-hand in validsets and/or sequences.

Regulations: On RummyCircle.com 21 Cards Rummy is played between 2 to 6 player with 3 packs of 53 cards each (including one printed joker per pack). Players play for points having a pre-decided rupee value. A minimum amount must be brought to the table by all the players. A toss comes into play to decide which player moves first and a set of 21 cards is dealt to each player randomly. First card from the pack is placed in the open deck indicating that the game has started but the rest of the cards are placed face-down in the closed deck slot. An indiscriminately selected joker at the beginning is used in the game. The upper joker and the lower joker are cards one rank above and below the cut joker of the same suit as the cut joker. For example, if the Queen of a suit is selected as joker for a game, then the J and the K of the same suit as the cut jokers are the upper and the lower jokers respectively.

E.g If 7 ♠ is the cut joker then 6 ♠ is the lower joker and 8 ♠ is the upper joker.

If the Ace of a suit is selected as joker for a game, then the K and the 2 of the same suit as the cut jokers are the upper and the lower jokers respectively. The combination K-A-2 is not considered as a validsequence (even if Ace is a joker).

Printed Joker: In case a printed joker is selected as joker for a game, then players can also use Ace card of any suit as a joker in their sets and / or sequences.

  • The lower joker is the K ♠ and the upper joker is 2 ♠ in this case
    • The A ♠ is a value card in this case

At the beginning of the move the player picks a card from any of the decks. A player's turn finishes after he has discarded a card in the open deck. One or more jokers can be brought to use for completing your sets and/or sequences. However, a joker cannot be used to complete Tunnelas or Dublees. Moving the card at the end of your turn will make you eligible to announce that you have finished the game and therefore declare your sets and sequences and declaration requires the players to show the cards in hand by grouping them in sets/sequences. The game can come to an end by making a validdeclaration in any of the following ways:

  • Declaring at least three pure sequences and the rest of the cards arranged in sets or sequences
  • Declaring at least three Tunnelas. The other cards need not be arranged.
  • Declaring at least eight Dublees. The other cards need not be arranged.
  • Declaring eight jokers in a single group. The other cards need not be arranged.
NOTE: With three decks, the same card cannot be used twice in a set. For instance 9 ♠ 9 ♠ 9 ♥ is not a validset. With three decks, the same card can be used thrice in a set validcombination called a Tunnela. For instance, 6 ♠6 ♠ 6 ♠ is called a Tunnela/London and is a validpure sequence.

Scoring in Points Rummy

Rules for deciding the winner: The game comes to an end on presentation of a validdeclaration by a player. The score of every player is calculated based on the rules detailed below.

Following the validdeclaration by a player, the scoring for each player is done. If more than one players drop the game in their first move, they lose 30 points each and the game resumes until another player makes a validdeclaration. On dropping the game after the first move the players lose 70 points each and the game is continued until a player makes a validdeclaration. A player making a validdeclaration gets points equal to the sum of all the points lost by all the losing players. The points won section in the game results for the winner is always positive.

The calculation of the points for the players who have not declared when another player has declared is done on the following basis:

  • J, Q, K, A of any suite bring 10 points each for the losing player
  • The other numbered cards bear the same points as their face value e.g. 8 carries 8 points and 2 carries 2 points.
  • Joker cards are assigned zero points.
  • When a game finishes, a losing player's points lost are computed by adding points for cards that are not grouped as sets/sequences with the following exceptions:
    • If the losing player has no pure sequence, all cards are counted.
    • If the losing player does not have 3 sequences, but has one or two pure sequence(s), only the pure sequence(s) are not counted.
    • If the losing player has three pure sequences, then the impure sequences/sets are considered validand not counted towards the players points lost.
    • A maximum of 120 points can be lost by a player in one hand. For illustration, if a player's sum of points lost is 150 he/she will still lose only 120 points. But if a player's points lost are 100, he/she will lose 100 points
  • Note: In the game results, the points won section for a losing player, is always negative, since he/she gives those points to the winner. A losing player will lose only 2 points which implies that his points won will be equal to -2 if he declares the following groups/cards in hand:

    • Cards of all the players are arranged in to validsets and sequences including 3 pure sequences.
    • 6 or more pairs of Dublees declared by a player (each dublee should be grouped into a separate group)
    • 7 or more jokers declared by a player (all of the jokers are grouped into an independent group from the rest of the cards)

Special case: Automatic drop from the game occurs to the player missing three consecutive moves. This player obtains a middle drop score and he/she loses 70 points. Without meeting the game objective, declaring the game will make a player lose 120 points for the hand and the game continues till another player makes a validdeclaration.

Deal Show: If the losing player has not had his first turn before the opponent has made a validdeclaration, then:

    • The losing player loses points equal to half of his/her cards in hand. For example, if the cards in hand for a losing player total to 30 points, then the player loses 15 points.
    • The minimum points a player can lose in this case is 2 (if the cards in hand total 2, 3, 4, & 5)
    • The maximum points a player can lose in this case is 60 (if the cards in hand total 120 or more).

Calculation of the Value Card Score and the maximum loss (in terms of points)

  • Other than the points won/lost in 21 cards Points Rummy, each non-dropped player receives positive scores for value cards in hand and gets negative scores for value cards held by other non-dropped players.
  • Value cards in a game are the upper joker, lower joker and the same suit cut joker.
  • The points calculated for each player for value cards are as mentioned in the table below:

Single Card Two Cards Three Cards
    Same Suit joker 10 30 50
    Up Joker 10 30 50
    Down Joker 10 30 50
  • One upper joker, one lower joker and one same suit cut joker together make up a marriage or a jackpot. A player having a marriage in hand is liable to get 100 points from each non dropped player. For two marriages or three marriages held by a player he/she receives 300 points and 500 points respectively, from each non-dropped player
  • The maximum points a player can lose is 120. This means that irrespective of the player holding higher cards, the points are capped at 120

What is the maximum loss (in terms of points) that a player can lose in a game?

  • Anything below 120 is awarded as points lost
  • The total loss which a player has to bear (points lost and value cards score) in any given deal is capped to 200 points

Note: A marriage can be used as jokers to form other sets\sequences. It is not always necessary to declare it as a sequence in order to receive points for it. Cards counted as a part of a marriage do not get individual value card points for the player. On making invaliddeclaration the player will exchange points with other players for his/her value cards.

Examples for value card calculation:

Value Cards Held Total Points to be received from each non-dropped player
2 Up Jokers 30
1 Up Joker, 1 Down Joker 20
2 Up Jokers, 1 Down Joker 40
2 Same Suit Jokers, 2 Down Jokers 60
1 Up Joker, 1 Down Joker, 1 Same Suit Joker 100

The Total Score for a player is given by the following formula

formula

Calculation of Winnings in Points Rummy:

Cash is won by players having a positive score at the end of each game by the following formula:

Winnings =(Positive Score of the Winner) X (Rupee-value of the point) - RummyCircle Fees

E.g.: 5 players play a ' 2 / Point' Rummy game. Player 5 declares and the other four players get total scores of -10, -20, -30 and -40 points respectively. The winner's Cash Prize will be calculated as 2 x (10 + 20 + 30 + 40) = 200. This will be credited to the winner's RummyCircle account after deduction of the RummyCircle Fee.

How Does the Drop Option Work?

The Drop option is available to every player, throughout the game. For using the Drop option, the player must not have picked a card from open/closed deck in that turn. The two types of drops are:

  • First Drop - Dropping the game in the very first turn makes the player lose 30 points
  • Middle Drop - Dropping the player after the first move makes him lose 70 points
  • Special case: Missing three turns consecutively, leads to the automatic dropping of the player, which fetches him the middle drop sore.
  • Disconnection Scenario: On game table, under 'Options' >> 'Game Play Option', you can specify what should happen on the game table in case you get disconnected. You can choose to get dropped after 3 missed moves or you can remain on game table till you get reconnected.
