Indian Rummy - Tricks & Tips

If you have landed on this page, you are definitely an Indian rummy lover and you must be aware that how cool is to win an Indian rummy game. Actually, Indian Rummy is quite a tricky game and that's what makes it challenging and interesting. Winning a rummy game is not about luck but a mixture of skill, tricks and tips. You have to be sharp, quick, have patience and use your mind skills and could use the below rummy tricks and tips for winning in Indian rummy games:

Rummy Trick #1: Discard high point cards:

As you might be aware the Aces and picture cards have higher points therefore the trick while playing the Indian rummy games is to discard the high point cards first. While discarding high point cards, you should also check that it should not be helpful to your opponent.

Suppose you have made 2 sequences and your opponent has declared rummy, you will get the sum of points of the unused cards and if these cards are high point cards, you will get a higher penalty. To avoidgetting higher points after losing the game, you should try discarding high point cards first.

Rummy Trick #2: Try to make two sequences as soon as possible:

the trick here is that a player should focus on making two sequences and at-least one of which should be pure. This trick will help you if you lose the rummy game and ensure that you don't get sum of points of all cards in your hand. Also, if you have made one pure sequences, you can use joker to make the second sequence.

Rummy Tricks/Tip #3 - You can use 3 or more cards in a Sequence:

You can make a pure sequence with 3 or more cards. So just in case you got more cards of the same suit, you can make a sequence with 3 or more cards.

Rummy Trick/Tip #4 - Use Jokers carefully

Joker can make a big difference to any rummy game but it is seen that even if people get a joker they are not able to make full use of the joker. So in the Indian cards rummy games, the trick to use a joker is that you should first see that you have two pure sequences ready and if you have the 2 pure sequences ready, you can use a joker to complete the rest of the sequences. If you don't have the 2 sequences ready, first complete the 2 sequences with the joker.

Also, it is advisable that you should use the joker to make a sequence/set with the high-point cards. This way you can reduce the number of points in your hand.

Rummy Trick/Tip #5 - Focus on your opponent's cards

Keeping an eye on the cards thrown and picked by your opponent is one of the crucial rummy tricks that one should learn. You do not get many chances in a rummy game so the trick here is to remember two things:

  • Remember the card/s discarded by your opponent: This will help because if the opponent discarded 5 of hearts, it is quite possible that your opponent would not require a 4 or 6 of hearts. Therefore if you were to discard a 4 or 6 of hearts, there is a high probability that your opponent will not pick that card.
  • Remember the card/s that was discarded by you and picked by your opponent: When playing Indian rummy, you would not want that your opponent picks up the card/s discarded by you. So the trick here is that even if your opponent picks the card discarded by you; remember that card and quickly calculate/guess about the possible sequence/set that he/she could be making and then try not to discard a card that could help him/her complete the sequence. Example: if you discarded Jack of spades and your opponent picked it, try not to discard 10 or queen of spades because there is a high probability that your opponent might use it to finish the rummy game.
